Feedback and conclusions on Permit

Mauro Ginevri with Permit catch 200

With exact registrations like date, time, tides and weather conditions the catching results of the Permit that were caught with only one special fly at Avalon locations are looking like a little goldmine for fishermen, scientists and biologist. With Mauro's excellent registration the knowledge about the Permit in Cayo Largo, Jardines de la Reina and some of our other locations increasing rapidly too. The catches also improving the experiences and skills from our guides enormously, and because all this extra knowledge, more Permit have been caught in a MUCH shorter period with the same or slightly increased number of guests.

Avalon Permit Fly

Our grandslam overview page

The 2010-2011 period in which the second 100 Permit catches were taken, was a great season for Avalon, and 2011 is not even finished yet. So far, many fly fishermen succeed at one of our Avalon locations, and many had the trip of a life time. A lot of Grand Slam successes also were realized. Not only Cayo Largo and Jardines de la Reina got strong and powerful feedback from our clients, but also other less well-known Avalon locations started to improve slowly, and becoming more and more popular lately. Several experienced bonefish fishermen told us that they never seen such large bonefish as in JDR this season and numerous bones over 20lb have been caught. Earlier guests also told us that the number of Tarpon also was far more than in previous years, and the number of Permit and shoals of Permit clearly were up compared to previous years.

What also makes this 2010-2011 season so special for us is the fact that we registered two permit caught by women, and this season we had the most couples and female visitors ever.

Also remarkable was the superb fly fishing action by 13 years old Tom Hradecky who caught 2 permit and a double Grand Slam all within the same day.

And.. what to think about Javier Solis who caught 6 permit in one week or Mauro Labirio who caught 3 Super Grand Slam in just one week.

The ban of commercial fishing by the government in 1996, and giving extra rest to some of our fishing areas in Cayo Largo and JDR to slow down our own fishing pressure seems to be the magic touch to improving our fishing grounds and number of fish. Our strict catch and release policy does not have any adverse impact or influence on the number of fish, and only makes the fishing better as well.

In our Permit catch overviews and Grand Slam reports, one can find the names of many of the same guests, and that means that guest love our places, and clients want to come back over and over again.

When we look back to our 101-200 Permit catches, we discovered quickly that  our first 0-100 Permit were caught between Sunday, April 26th, 2009 and Sunday, June 13th, 2010 and thatís exactly 413 days.
This is equal to exactly 1 year, 1 month, and 18 days. In that period we hooked 144 Permit with the Avalon Permit Fly and lost 44. Only 2 Permit were caught with other patterns but we did not count them in our overview.

Permit 101-200 were caught between Sunday, June 13th, 2010 and Tuesday, May 24th, 2011 and that is only 345 days. This is equal to exactly 11 months and 11 days. In that period we hooked 141 Permit with the Avalon Permit Fly, and lost 41. Only 4 Permit were caught with other patterns but we did not count them in our overview. This means that we caught the same number of fish but in 2 months and 7 days faster, and with only slightly more guests.
